November/December 2011

The Davie Area Land Trust Annual Meeting will take place at the Old Davie School, 6650 Griffin Road in Davie, on Sunday, December 4, 2011, from 12:00-4:00pm. The Land Trust Annual Meeting will be held in conjunction with the Old Davie School's 10th Annual Old Davie Christmas celebration, which features food and lots of family activities including Santa, a petting zoo, and pony rides. The Davie Area Land Trust will also present noted children's author Harvey Oyer III. Mr. Oyer is a fifth-generation Floridian and the author of "The Adventures of Charlie Pierce"- you can find a lot more about him at The Adventures of Charlie Pierce. Mr. Oyer will host a story-telling session in addition to helping spread and strengthen the Davie Area Land Trust mission. The annual meeting also will include the business of the Land Trust, including updates on projects, plans for 2012, a look at our strategic plan, and election of officers.

Mr.Oyer's biographical information from his web site:

Harvey E. Oyer III is a fifth generation Floridian and is descended from one of the earliest pioneer families in South Florida. He is the great-great grandson of Captain Hannibal Dillingham Pierce and his wife Margretta Moore Pierce, who in 1872 became one of the first non-Native American families to settle in Southeast Florida. Oyer is the great-grand nephew of Charlie Pierce, the subject of this book series. Oyer is an attorney in West Palm Beach, Florida, a Cambridge University educated archaeologist, and an avid historian. He served for many years as the Chairman of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and has written or contributed to numerous books and articles about Florida history. Many of the stories contained in this book series have been passed down through five generations of his family. Oyer has won numerous awards for his Adventures of Charlie Pierce children’s book series

March 2011

Davie Mayor Judy Paul joins Marcie Nolan, current Davie Area Land Trust Chair, and volunteers at Water Matters Day, an annual Broward County event held at Tree Tops Park in Davie. Our continuing outreach mission leads us to many community events, where we spread the word and encourage our friends and neighbors to join us by becoming members. The Davie Area Land Trust is a membership organization and relies completely on the efforts and contributions of our members as we work with local government and landowners to preserve land and open space.

Every year the Davie Area Land Trust staffs a booth at this event, one of Davie's most popular annual attractions, to meet our neighbors in our ongoing membership drive and to inform residents of the opportunity we have to help preserve open spaces, habitat, and the rural character that we cherish here in Davie, Florida and our surrounding areas.

August 2008

The 8th St. Park plantings are complete. The park is not yet open because of work the Town of Davie still has to finish, but please take a look at our efforts so far. This is the first Davie Area Land Trust project and we couldn't have done it without the strong community support. Thanks! Please visit the 8th Street Park page for the full story!

Join us Saturday, May 3, as we start our butterfly garden- download the Volunteer flyer (.pdf, Adobe Acrobat required)

The Davie Area Land Trust began planting trees on April 3, 2008 at the 8th Street Park in Davie as its first grant-funded project. The park is located north of Western High School, just east of SW 136th Ave- south on 136th Ave from I-595. We're seeking volunteers to help with daily watering of the new trees as well as planting of the butterfly garden coming up in early May. High School students can log community service hours by volunteering.

About the project:

Led by Board Member Judy Paul, the Land Trust applied in 2006 for a Broward Beautiful community beautification grant and was awarded a $10,000 matching grant to landscape the park in the 2007-08 County budget year. This is a perfect example of public-private partnership between the Davie Area Land Trust and the Town of Davie, because the park was purchased by the Town last year with funds from Broward County’s Safe Parks and Open Space Bond, but the Town had not yet funded Park development. Town budget cuts likely would have delayed development of this park, but the Davie Area Land Trust applied for the Broward Beautiful Grant, which is only available to not-for-profit organizations such as community groups and homeowner associations. We received 100% matching funds, allowing us to provide landscape design, purchasing and installation of a variety of trees as well as a butterfly garden. Our work in the park is expected to be completed by June 2008.

HELP!! We need your help to meet our matching funds for this $10,000 grant. The Davie Area Land Trust is funded solely through membership dues, donations and grants. Your donations to the Davie Area Land Trust are dedicated to LOCAL land preservation efforts and are tax-deductible. Please donate now via our SECURE online system  or send a donation via mail to Davie Area Land Trust, 6591 Orange Drive, Davie, FL 33314.

Pellicane Challenge Grant Presentation- August, 2007

DAVIE AREA LAND TRUST RECEIVES $2,500 MATCHING GRANT

The Davie Area Land Trust received a $2,500 matching grant from Davie resident and open space advocate Christina P. Pellicane, D.V.M. at its August 2007 monthly meeting.  The grant matched donations made to the Land Trust for the first half of 2007.

“Essentially, the Land Trust will be what local citizens make of it, meaning that local citizens really are the Land Trust,” said Pellicane.  “We all have to recognize this and accept the challenge of the Land Trust’s success.  We offered this grant with the hope that other members of the community will follow our example and get behind this grass roots effort.”

Dr. Pellicane is a veterinary ophthalmologist with an office on Orange Drive in Davie.  Pictured here are (l to r) are her husband, James Bateman, Dr. Pellicane, their son Jimmy, Davie Area Land Trust Chair Linda Greck and Land Trust Board Member Judy Paul.

Broward Beautiful Grant Application- June, 2007

The Davie Area Land Trust has applied for a grant through the Broward Beautiful program- program details here- to purchase and install drought resistant native plants and trees for the 8th St. Park project. The Town of Davie has purchased the property at 136th Avenue and SW 8th St, and if we can get the grant we can beautify this parcel.

Currently this vacant piece of land is treeless and barren, weeds and struggling grass. Soon, with lots of help from the Leos, the Land Trust, budding botanists from nearby Western High School, and local nurseries we will be enjoying beautiful trees surrounded by flowering native plants alive with butterflies and birds. It will be a neighborhood park with some fun facilities, beautiful landscaping, and a new start to a neighborhood that needs a place of its own.

We will need lots of help to get the matching funds for the grants- donations of money, time, and landscaping materials, and some sweat equity from all of us.

We can sure use some help!

Roy Rogers, Weston 'Founding Father', Addresses Land Trust

September 11, 2006

The Davie Area Land Trust September meeting came to order after a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Trust welcomed Roy Rogers, local environmentalist and former Senior Vice President of Arvida Corporation. Mr. Rogers current activities include promoting the installation of giant working windmills throughout South Florida, as both a reminder of our area's agricultural heritage and a symbol of natural, renewable, and sustainable energy for the future. During the development of Weston Mr. Rogers' leadership helped guide the preservation of wetlands and environmental buffers to the Everglades during the master planning and development phases; and currently his "Green Team” of environmental consultants is highly respected throughout Florida and beyond.

Davie Area Land Trust now a 501(c)(3) non-profit

August 2006

The Davie Area Land Trust's Federal tax-exempt status was granted in August of 2006, and is retroactive to 2004. Donations to the Trust are now federally tax-deductible.  The Board celebrated and Linda baked a cake!
