NewsAugust 2008The 8th St. Park plantings are complete. The park is not yet open because of work the Town of Davie still has to finish, but please take a look at our efforts so far. This is the first Davie Area Land Trust project and we couldn't have done it without the strong community support. Thanks! April 2008- 8th St. Park planting

DAVIE
AREA LAND TRUST RECEIVES $2,500 MATCHING GRANT
The Davie
Area Land Trust received a $2,500 matching grant from Davie resident and
open space advocate Christina P. Pellicane, D.V.M. at its August
2007 monthly meeting. The grant matched donations made to the Land Trust
for the first half of 2007.
“Essentially, the Land Trust will be what local citizens make of it, meaning that local citizens really are the Land Trust,” said Pellicane. “We all have to recognize this and accept the challenge of the Land Trust’s success. We offered this grant with the hope that other members of the community will follow our example and get behind this grass roots effort.”
Dr. Pellicane is a veterinary ophthalmologist with an office on Orange Drive in Davie. Pictured here are (l to r) are her husband, James Bateman, Dr. Pellicane, their son Jimmy, Davie Area Land Trust Chair Linda Greck and Land Trust Board Member Judy Paul.
Broward Beautiful Grant Application- June, 2007The Davie Area Land Trust has applied for a grant through the Broward Beautiful program- program details here- to purchase and install drought resistant native plants and trees for the 8th St. Park project. The Town of Davie has purchased the property at 136th Avenue and SW 8th St, and if we can get the grant we can beautify this parcel.
Currently this vacant piece of land is treeless and barren, weeds and struggling grass. Soon, with lots of help from the Leos, the Land Trust, budding botanists from nearby Western High School, and local nurseries we will be enjoying beautiful trees surrounded by flowering native plants alive with butterflies and birds. It will be a neighborhood park with some fun facilities, beautiful landscaping, and a new start to a neighborhood that needs a place of its own. We will need lots of help to get the matching funds for the grants- donations of money, time, and landscaping materials, and some sweat equity from all of us. We can sure use some help! Roy Rogers, Weston 'Founding Father', Addresses Land TrustSeptember 11, 2006The Davie Area Land Trust September meeting came to order after a moment of silence in remembrance of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Trust welcomed Roy Rogers, local environmentalist and former Senior Vice President of Arvida Corporation. Mr. Rogers current activities include promoting the installation of giant working windmills throughout South Florida, as both a reminder of our area's agricultural heritage and a symbol of natural, renewable, and sustainable energy for the future. During the development of Weston Mr. Rogers' leadership helped guide the preservation of wetlands and environmental buffers to the Everglades during the master planning and development phases; and currently his "Green Team” of environmental consultants is highly respected throughout Florida and beyond.
Mr. Rogers spoke in support of the Land Trust's goals of preserving open space and green vistas, and offered to help get a windmill installed at Robbins Lodge in conjunction with the Trust.
