2005 Annual Meeting Horses in the Storm
January 2006- Stan Hemphill February 2006- Will Abberger
June 2006- Ron Bergeron

Special Guest at the January 2nd meeting

Stan Hemphill, President of South Florida-based Leisure Grants Service, Inc. was the special guest speaker at the Land Trust’s first community meeting of 2006.  Mr. Hemphill has 33 years of experience in revenue programs/management and development of funding resources, including grants.

At one point in his presentation, Mr. Hemphill enthusiastically said,

“You all have the opportunity to make history here in Davie…you have formed at a crucial time -- when possibly the last parcels of undeveloped land can still be preserved instead of developed, and when the Town just passed a $25 million open space bond for the same basic purpose.

His presentation outlined some of the ways the Land Trust can “write” its own chapter in Davie’s history, for instance:

  • by working with the Town’s bond program to pursue matching grant opportunities that are only available to not-for-profit land preservation organizations, potentially increasing financial resources for Davie’s land acquisition or improvement projects;
  • by helping to educate the community about land preservation opportunities still existing in Davie;
  • by promoting and facilitating volunteer-based stewardship of preserved properties;
  • by creating one or more endowment funds for long-term maintenance of open space properties
Local resident Pam Pelkin came to the meeting to listen to Mr. Hemphill, and to explore possibly preserving property she owns in east Davie as open space instead of selling it to a homebuilder.

Ron Bergeron- Guest Speaker, June 5, 2006

The Davie Area Land Trust was privileged to welcome Ron Bergeron, a true Davie pioneer and Everglades preservation champion to the Land Trust's June 5th meeting, held at Robbins Lodge. Ron's passion for preservation, his love of Davie's heritage, and his exciting vision for the future captivated a spellbound audience as he wove his story, Davie's story, and the state of Everglades restoration together for the Trust.

Ron sported a big bandage on his left arm, fresh from an all-too-close encounter with the top of the Everglades food chain. Chair Linda Greck is pictured below presenting Ron with a token of the Trust's appreciation- a chocolate alligator, a predator that Ron should have much less trouble dealing with.

Ron is currently working on plans for an Everglades museum and library, a facility that will chronicle the ten thousand years of inhabited Everglades history that we're aware of, with natural areas set aside for the many species that reside in the River of Grass. No cages, lots of history, and a natural setting will provide schools, children, tourists, and visitors from all over the world a look at one of the natural wonders of the world.

Judy Paul, Ron Bergeron, Davie Area Land Trust Chair Linda Greck, and Davie Area Land Trust Treasurer Fred Segal are pictured at the conclusion of the evening presenting Ron with a certificate of appreciation.
