MEETING NOTES
June 29, 2004
Those in attendance: Pedro Monteiro, Judy Price, Jill Cohen, Joyce Steward, Pam Pelkey, July Paul, Two Step, Margaret Wu, Robert Legg, Jill Cohen, Julie Aitken, Joe Phillips, Nick Maniatus, Rosie Anderson, Tom Truex, Karen Stenzel-Nowicki, Fred Segal, Michelle Bryson, Robert Johnson, Michael Bartlett, Ken Cohen, Linda Greck, Elizabeth Hopkins, Philip Busey, Marcie Nolan and Mike Orfanedes.
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm. Marcie Nolan welcomed everyone and introduced Town of Davie staff and Councilmembers that were in attendance. Marcie provided the group with background information on why the Town was interested in pursuing a land trust. The presentation continued with an overview of pertinent information regarding what a land trust is and how they work. Mike Orfanedes led a discussion on possibilities that a land trust might offer the Town of Davie. The discussion was followed with a video entitled “Land Preservation for Floridians”, produced by the Florida Land Trust Assn.. The video provided additional background on what a land trust is, what is can accomplish, a tax attorney’s view of conservation easements and a case study of a land trust project operating in North Florida.
Following the video, a group discussion was held regarding next steps. It was decided that meetings would be held on a weekly basis and the subject of the next meeting would be the establishment of a steering committee and subcommittees looking at issues such as finances, membership, land acquisition etc.. The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:15 pm.
